Cardiovascular Medicine Department

The Department of Cardiology of Hangzhou First People’s Hospital is the key discipline supported by the government of Zhejiang province, the center of Regional special disease of Zhejiang province, the first-class key subject of Hangzhou city, Coronary Intervention and Pacing Electrophysiology Training Base in Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou ECG Consultation Center, National Standardized Training Base for Resident Physicians, American Heart Association Professional Demonstration Center, China Primary Physician Cardiovascular Training Demonstration Center, and Sino-US Joint Cardiovascular Specialty Remote Training Center.

We have a total of 31 physicians working in our division which 9 are full senior physicians, 11 are associate senior physicians, 6 are attending physicians, and 5 resident physicians. Of all, 13 physicians have doctor degrees, and 17 got master degrees. We also have 3 doctoral supervisors, 6 master supervisors, and 3 chief advisors. The department has 85 approved beds, with more than 120,000 outpatients and more than 5,500 discharged patients each year.

For a long period of time, we have been committed to the treatment of difficult and severe cardiovascular diseases, interventional therapy, the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in pregnancy, and the prevention and education of sudden cardiac death, as well as participating in the establishment and operation of the public health prevention and treatment system. It is worth noting that we have successively become the certification unit of China Chest Pain Center, Atrial Fibrillation Center and Heart Failure Center.

The interventional center has 2 cardiology catheter laboratories, equipped with 2 DSA, intravascular ultrasound system, intra-aortic balloon anti-blood device (IABP), Carto three-dimensional electrophysiological mapping system, multi-conductivity physiometer, cardiopulmonary exercise device, cryostat Advanced equipment, etc. Besides, we also have an ECG telemetry room, a cardiopulmonary exercise room and a pacemaker program control room. We routinely perform interventional treatments for complex and critical coronary artery disease(including emergency interventional treatment of acute myocardial infarction, as well as interventional treatment of complex lesions such as left main disease, chronic complete occlusion (CTO), bifurcation, calcification,etc.), precise coronary interventional treatments (including intracoronary ultrasound (IVUS), coronary flow reserve (FFR), microcirculation resistance index (IMR) and other technical methods which can accurately assess coronary structure and functional lesions), pacemaker implantation treatments (for bradyarrhythmias, including various single-chamber and dual-chamber pacemakers, as well as the implantation of various traditional and new active fixed electrodes; also for heart failure and SCD, including implantation of cardiac resynchronization treatment devices (CRT, CRT-P/D), implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)), catheter ablation treatments for complex arrhythmias(such as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, atrial tachycardia, atrial flutter/ fibrillation, ventricular premature, ventricular tachycardia), and interventional treatments for structural heart disease(such as atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, valvular heart disease). Meanwhile, we perform renal artery interventional therapy and chemical ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy as also.

We are one of the earliest centers nationwide to carry out cryoablation of atrial fibrillation. Till now, the annual operation volume and success rate are in the forefront of the province and even the country. The director professor Yizhou Xu has obtained the qualification of global teaching in cryoballoon ablation. In addition, we are the first to develop new techniques such as percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion, leadless pacemaker implantation, excimer laser intracoronary plaque ablation, and percutaneous aortic valve replacement in Hangzhou.   

Furthermore, we have undertaken a number of national, provincial and international collaborative scientific research projects, and won a number of provincial scientific and technological progress awards. Meanwhile, we have successfully held many national continuing education classes, national seminars on difficult and severe cardiovascular diseases, and national coronary intervention conferences.

In terms of teaching, our department undertakes teaching and clinical practice tasks for the five-year undergraduate classes, international classes and postgraduates of Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and is also the clinical practice teaching base of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and many other medical schools.
