Gastrointestinal and Anal Surgery

The Department of Gastrointestinal and Anal Surgery is the Peak Medical Discipline of Hangzhou (General Surgery), with the Hangzhou Peritoneal tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Center established in the department. As a clinical specialty focusing on gastrointestinal and peritoneal cancers, the department is characterized by standardized diagnosis & treatment, and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for gastrointestinal cancer, and cytoreductive surgery & hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal cancer. The department pioneered the standardized laparoscopic surgery for gastrointestinal tumor, and its technical level is in the top position in the Zhejiang Province. The department undertakes technical guidance and consultation of difficult cases in provincial and municipal primary hospitals all the year round. With 65 beds, the department provides surgical treatment for nearly 1,000 patients with gastrointestinal tumors annually, including about 700 cases of gastrointestinal and peritoneal cancers, and has completed more than 4,000 cases of laparoscopic gastrointestinal tumor surgeries. The department has a strong academic atmosphere and has undertaken 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China project and 5 Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation projects. At present, the department is the master station of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Zhejiang Chinese Medicine University and Nanjing Medical University, including four master supervisors in surgery.

The department attaches great importance to academic exchanges and cooperation, and has long-term close academic cooperation with many foreign affiliated hospitals and well-known domestic hospitals. It holds standardized comprehensive diagnosis and treatment forum of gastrointestinal tumor and laparoscopic radical surgery demonstration and follow-up teaching class every year, and regularly carries out inter-hospital and intra-hospital multi-disciplinary diagnosis and treatment discussion (MDT) of gastrointestinal tumor in the province. The department has formed a medical team with advanced professional and technical force, a strong sense of responsibility, and great courage to explore and innovate.
