Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery

Overview

Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery (HBP), Affiliated Hangzhou First People's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, is the Peak Medical Discipline of Hangzhou. Its predecessor, Department of Surgery, was founded in 1928. Famous surgical predecessors Li Qian, Ligeng Wang, Tingyi Li, Jiping Zhu, Zhaonan Lin and Jinsheng Xia successively served as department directors. In 1990, Department of General Surgery was established. Professor Jinsheng Xia, Xiyuan Qian and Guanghua Feng successively served as department directors. In 2000, the first liver transplantation was successfully carried out under the guidance of Professor Shusen Zheng, who is one of the famous leaders of Organ transplant in China. And in 2004, the first small intestine transplantation in Zhejiang province was successfully performed in our hospital, filling the blank in Zhejiang province. In 2010, Department of HBP Surgery was officially established, and Professor Guanghua Feng, Yang Cai and Changku Jia were successively in charge of the department and served as department directors. In 2018, Hangzhou First People's Hospital officially became one of the affiliated hospitals of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. In 2020, Professor Xiao Xu, Yangtze River Scholars Distinguished Professor, laureate of the NSFC Distinguished Young Scholar, Associate Dean of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, was appointed as the new president of hospital, opening a new chapter in department development. At present, the department has a total of 41 medical staff, including 8 senior consultants and 9 consultants. The department has a strong and well-designed talent team, including Yangtze River Scholars Distinguished Professor, laureate of the NSFC Distinguished Young Scholar, the leading scientist of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", Zhejiang University “Qiushi” Professor, the high-level medical innovative talents of Zhejiang Province, New Century 151 Talents Plan of Zhejiang Province and 131 Talents Plan of Hangzhou, etc.

With the efforts of several generations over 100 years, the department of HBP Surgery has become a major department in hospital with high marks of clinical, scientific research and medical training achievements. The concept of Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) was normally applied in routine medical service. Both open and laparoscopic surgeriescould be well performed by HBP team, such as liver transplantation, pancreatoduodenectomy, duodenum-preserving head and uncinate process of pancreas resection, hilar cholangiocarcinoma surgery, complicated liver cancer surgery and precision liver resection. Radical operation and comprehensive therapy for HBP malignancies, end-stage liver disease, complex hepatolithiasis, severe pancreatitis and portal hypertension have reached the leading level in China. Successively, the department has been awarded different honors including the first and second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, National Innovation Team and the first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of Zhejiang Province.

A number of high level nationalresearch projects were granted, such as the National Science and Technology Major Project, the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and the Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China etc. HBP team carries out in-depth cooperation with many top international universities such as Cambridge University. Team members have published academic papers in high-impact national and international journals such as Gut, Journal of Hepatology and Molecular Cancer, etc.

Much attention was focused on surgical training in Department of HBP, aiming to cultivate outstanding surgical talents with a solid theoretical foundation, surgical skills and a global academic vision. Our department undertakes a series of teaching tasks such as theoretical teaching and clinical internship for eight-year program and five-year program undergraduates, postgraduates and international students of Zhejiang University, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University and Nanjing Medical University. As the chief editor, deputy chief editor and editorial committee, Professor Xiao Xu and Director Changku Jia participated in a series of national surgical textbooks and tutorials compiling. Our department has hosted a number of national and provincial training courses of advances in HBP surgery and received training doctors from many medical institutions in Guizhou, Fujian and Zhejiang.

 

Academic Level and Influence

The department of HBP Surgery is the unit of the Vice President of the Chinese Society of Organ Transplantation, the leader of the National Liver Transplantation Group and the designated President of the Zhejiang Society of Organ Transplantation. In recent years, the team members have published a large number of academic papers in high-impact national and international journals such as Gut, Journal of Hepatology and Molecular Cancer, etc. Professor Xiao Xu also serves as editors of professional journals such as《Cancer Letters》, 《Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International (HBPD INT)》, 《Chinese Journal of Transplantation》, 《Chinese Journal of Digestive Surgery》, 《Chinese Journal of Organ Transplantation》 and 《Chinese Journal of Hepatic Surgery (Electronic Edition)》, and takes the lead to set up a number of guidelines and expert consensus in the field of HBP and liver transplantation. As the chairman/executive chairman for consecutive years, Professor Xiao Xu has been in charge of the Chinese Transplant Congress, the International Multi-disciplinary Fusion Forum on Digestive Disease, and the Zhejiang University-Cambridge University Organ Transplant Frontier Joint Academic Symposium, which has a wide range of international academic influence. The department holds several national and provincial HBP Surgery training programs annually, including the International Gastrointestinal Disease Multidisciplinary Fusion Summit Forum, Tumor Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Multidisciplinary Diagnosis and Treatment Symposium, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disease Hangzhou Forum and Severe Pancreatitis Minimally Invasive Treatment West Lake Forums, and receives training doctors from many basic medical units. The activity of "Tumor Precision Diagnosis and Treatment for primary hospitals" has been held for many years, aiming to improve the clinical and research capabilities of tumor prevention, diagnosis and treatment in primary hospitals, and promote multi-disciplinary and all-round deep cooperation. Team members have repeatedly served as the host or made academic reports in the International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS) Annual Conference, the European Cancer Summit, the Liver Week and other international academic conferences.

 

Clinical Superiority

In 2000, Department of HBP successfully performed the first liver transplantation under the guidance of Professor Shusen Zheng. In 2003, the department also successfully performed the first intestine transplantation in Zhejiang province. After one hundred years of development and accumulation, Department of HBP has established a management system of complicated HBP diseases through MDTdiagnosis and treatment based on surgeryand combination of other therapeutic strategies including immunotherapy chemoradiotherapy, endoscopic diagnosis and treatment, ultrasonic intervention and intensive care. Our department possesses diversified advanced facilities and a well-structured team characterized by all-round skills, who is specialized in both open and laparoscopic surgery, such as liver transplantation, pancreatoduodenectomy, duodenum-preserving head and uncinate process of pancreas resection, hilar cholangiocarcinoma surgery, complicated liver cancer surgery and precision liver resection. Research interests

The major research direction: ①Precision diagnosis and treatment of digestive system malignancy; ②Clinical implementation of minimally invasive surgery and new treatment techniques; ③Innovation and application of liver transplantation for the treatment of end-stage liver diseases. Currently, the HBP team undertakes multiple state-level scientific research projects, including the National Science and Technology Major Projects, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Key Program of the National Natural Science Foundation. Carrying out in-depth cooperation in scientific research with University of Cambridge and other top international universities. Relying on the abundant clinical resources and strong policy guarantees of Affiliated Hangzhou First People's Hospital,Zhejiang University School of Medicine, the HBP team aims at national major health demend in order to provide a solid foundation for the continuous improvement of cancer prevention and treatment.

 

Medical Education

With the goal of cultivate outstanding surgical talents with a solid theoretical foundation, surgical operation skills and a global academic vision, the HBP team undertakes a series of teaching tasks such as theoretical teaching and clinical internship for eight-year and five-year program undergraduates, postgraduates and international students of Zhejiang University, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University and Nanjing Medical University. Several students are sent to University of Cambridge, University of Pennsylvania and New York University for clinical internships and scientific research training every year. As the chief editor, deputy chief editor and editorial committee, Professor Xiao Xu and Director Changku Jia participated in the compilation of a series of national-level surgical textbooks and tutorials including the medical planning textbooks for national Institutions of higher learning "Surgery" (five-year and eight-year programs), "General Surgery", "Introduction to Clinical Medicine", "Transplantion Oncology", "Progress in Surgery", "Liver Transplantation", "Pancreas Transplantation", "Perioperative Management of Liver Transplantation”, “Mechanical Perfusion Preservation and Repair of Organs”, “Organ Transplantation”, “A Collection of Typical Clinical Cases of Practical Hepatobiliary Surgery”, “Clinical Practice Guidelines-Surgery Division”, “Diagnosis and Treatment of Intrahepatic and Extrahepatic Bile Duct Dilation " and "BLOOD TRANSFUSION IN CLINICAL PRACTICE" etc. A number of state and provincial-level training programs for HBP surgery were held, and training personnel from many medical institutions in Guizhou, Fujian and Zhejiang were recruited Therefore, advanced medical concepts and technologies in HBP surgery were radiated to the whole province or even all over the state.
